Agents Laud 2009 "Lightyear Luau"

Over 100 Agents Attend
Two-Day National Agent
Sales Conference

By Braun Mincher, President, PCG Consulting Group, Inc.  9/6/2009

In my 11 years of being a Lightyear agent, I have had the opportunity to join my fellow agents in multiple venues – Las Vegas and New Orleans come to the top of my mind – to share ideas, network, give feedback and learn about new products and services from Lightyear Network Solutions. Headed by telecom industry icon, and historic 6-term COMPTEL chairman, Sherman Henderson, Lightyear has ridden the rollercoaster of the last decade and now appears to be stronger and more focused than ever.

For the second year in a row, on 9/2 & 9/3, Lightyear hosted over 100 agents for the 2-day event at the Harrah’s Horseshoe Hotel & Casino in Southern Indiana, just across the river from their headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. Agents from all over the country descended on Tuesday and most of us used that first night to catch up with old friends and colleagues.

On Wednesday, participants had activity choices of a golf scramble or a Maker’s Mark tour – I always use the golf outing as an opportunity to learn more about my fellow business owners (and what makes them successful), as well as to build relationships with the Lightyear folks in person. It’s become a tradition for me to ride back to the hotel with Sherm Henderson after the golf event so that I can pick his brain, talk business and find out what “really” is going on. I’m pleased to report that things are exciting with Lightyear and they are working harder than ever to satisfy the needs of both their agents and customers.

A summary of the announcements and topics covered at the 2009 Lightyear National Agent Sales Conference were as follows:

  • Introduction of the “Agent Bonus League” (known as the “ABL”) which is designed to encourage agents bring in new business and compete with the almost non-existent agent “equity” programs. Bonus payouts start at $25,000 and range up to over $1 Million; a big benefit is that agents do not have to wait years for an “event” to occur to get paid.

  • Lightyear and Sprint teamed up to reinvent the wholesale partnership model. This includes Sprint’s complete portfolio of wholesale wireline and wireless voice and data services. At this center of this new announcement is the $59.99 unlimited talk, long distance, texting and data program.

  • Agent Awards Dinner and Lightyear Luau followed by comedic entertainment and the Lightyear Karaoke/Jam session.

  • Product presentations – Dynamic & Integrated T-1, Nationwide PRI, Voice Services, MPLS Networks, Wireless, Hosted VoIP and the announcement of new $15 SIP trunks.

Once again, I was impressed with the conference and the overall Lightyear team. While some things naturally evolve and change over time, it’s nice to know that other things stay the same – namely the Lightyear management team, most who were recognized for 10+ years of service. I also very much agree with Lightyear’s philosophy that “Relationships Matter,” as that is also how I choose to run my business. We have very much enjoyed working with Lightyear for the past decade, and I have never seen a carrier so willing to do “whatever it takes” to help support it’s agents in the field. Lightyear continues to be one of our most valued partners in this constantly changing industry.

As the closing cocktail reception on Thursday night, it was exciting to debrief the conference with my fellow agents and talk about our various strategies for the coming year. While most businesspeople I know are pessimistic about the current economic climate, the telecom industry is continuing to leverage new technology and ways to do things “better, faster and cheaper” to continue to grow; everyone I spoke with is enjoying good business opportunities and having fun. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!
