Nancy & I love to get away from our hectic life in Lake
Elsinore and one of our favorite day trips is to Big Bear Lake about 90
minutes away by car. On this particular day trip to Big Bear we decided
to take our canoe along since all it does is sit in our back yard all year
long.
(If you watched the video above then you know we never
actually got the canoe off the car since the normal place we put it in the
water - a small stream right in front of the Fawnskin post office - was
all silted up.)
If you've never been to Big Bear Lake the best thing to
do first is to circle it which you can do in about 45 minutes. The South
side of the lake is where the town of Big Bear is with the two ski area
South of the middle of town. The North side of the lake is the quiet side
with a couple public campgrounds, a public marina and the very small (and
quiet) town of Fawnskin.
If you like to mountain bike then take your bike or rent
one at the ski area to go up the ski lift and ride all the fire access
roads down the mountain.
If you're like me and Nancy and you just like to chill
out and stare at the lake then head over to
B's Backyard Bar-B-Que
Bar for the best chilled out view of the lake. That's what we did.

check out the video of that.
After we finished staring at the lake at B's we headed
to the Fawnskin side and hung out at the
Grout Bay Picnic Area (1/4 mile
west of the
Fawnskin post office) for awhile just enjoying the quiet and the
summer mountain air. If you're coming up with kids this is an ideal spot
as it has parking in the picnic area or on the highway, is free to the
public and has a bit of space to wander around in the trees right next to
the lake.
We finished the day with a terrific late lunch at the
North Shore Cafe (click
her for video) and then a stroll through Fawn Park. Fawn Park is right
across the street from North Shore Cafe in Fawnskin and may be the only
place around all of Big Bear Lake where you can lay down on grass and look
up at the trees and clouds.
